Grade Calculator
Find out what score you need on your final exam to reach your target grade. Handles any exam weight percentage — instantly shows if your goal is achievable.
About This Calculator
Enter your current grade, the weight of the upcoming final exam, and your target grade. The calculator tells you exactly what score you need on the final — or whether you've already hit your goal.
How It Works
The calculator divides your grade into two parts: the coursework already completed (weighted at 100% minus the final's percentage) and the final exam (weighted at the percentage you specify). It solves for the unknown final score that makes your weighted average equal to the target grade. If your current grade is already high enough that any final score will meet your target, the calculator tells you so. If no possible score (0–100) can reach your target, it flags the goal as unachievable.
The Formula
needed = (target − current × (1 − weight÷100)) ÷ (weight÷100)
- needed
- score required on the final exam
- target
- desired overall grade (%)
- current
- current grade before the final (%)
- weight
- final exam's share of the overall grade (%)
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I find the final exam weight?
- Check your course syllabus — the final exam is usually listed as a percentage of your overall grade (e.g., "Final exam = 25%"). If your syllabus shows points, divide final exam points by total course points.
- What if the calculator says "Not possible"?
- Your target grade cannot be reached no matter what you score on the final. Either accept a lower target or speak with your instructor about extra credit opportunities.
- Does this work for midterms or other exams?
- Yes — enter the weight of any upcoming exam (midterm, quiz, project) and this formula applies identically. Just make sure "current grade" reflects only the work completed before that exam.
