About This Calculator

BMI Prime is your BMI expressed as a fraction of 25 — the upper boundary of the WHO normal weight band. A BMI Prime of 1.0 means you are exactly at a BMI of 25. Values below 0.74 indicate underweight; 0.74–1.0 is normal; above 1.0 is overweight or obese. Enter your height and weight in metric or imperial units to see your BMI Prime, your current WHO band, and the ideal weight that would bring you to a BMI Prime of 1.0.

How It Works

Enter your height and weight. The calculator computes your standard BMI, then divides it by 25 to give the BMI Prime ratio. It also calculates the target body weight that would place you at a BMI Prime of 1.0 (BMI = 25), so you know the weight associated with the upper limit of the healthy range at your height. Switch between metric and imperial units at any time.

The Formula

BMI Prime = BMI ÷ 25 Ideal weight = target × 25 × h²

standard body mass index (kg/m²)
25

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BMI Prime?
BMI Prime is the ratio of your actual BMI to the upper boundary of the WHO normal range (25). It was introduced by Garrow and Webster (1985) and later refined by Gadzik (2006). A value of exactly 1.0 means BMI = 25. Values above 1.0 indicate excess weight; below 0.74 indicates underweight. Because it's a single dimensionless number, it's easier to interpret for people unfamiliar with absolute BMI values — a BMI Prime of 1.15 means you are 15% above the normal upper limit.
How is BMI Prime different from regular BMI?
Regular BMI is an absolute value (kg/m²) with the WHO classification bands mapped to specific ranges (18.5–24.9 normal, 25–29.9 overweight, etc.). BMI Prime normalises BMI to the same 0–1+ scale regardless of the cutoff bands. The two carry the same information — BMI Prime is simply BMI divided by 25.
What is a healthy BMI Prime?
A BMI Prime between 0.74 and 1.0 (corresponding to BMI 18.5–24.9) is within the WHO normal band. This is an informational population screening range, not a medical target for any individual. Athletes, older adults, and people with high muscle mass may have a high BMI Prime despite low body fat — context matters.
Can I use BMI Prime to track progress?
Yes. Because BMI Prime is unitless and anchored to a familiar reference point (1.0 = BMI 25), it can be a convenient single metric to track over time. A decrease toward 1.0 from above, or an increase toward 0.74 from below, signals movement toward the healthy band. Pair it with other measurements (waist circumference, body fat %) for a fuller picture.
