About This Calculator
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick screen of weight relative to height. Enter your measurements in metric or imperial units to see your BMI and the World Health Organization weight category.
How It Works
BMI divides your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. The result places you in one of four WHO bands — underweight, normal, overweight, or obese. Switch between metric and imperial units at any time; your values convert automatically.
The Formula
BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)²

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a healthy BMI?
- The WHO defines a normal BMI as 18.5 to 24.9. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese. These are population screening bands, not an individual diagnosis.
- Does BMI work for athletes and muscular people?
- Not always. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so very muscular people can have a high BMI while having low body fat. Pair BMI with a body-fat estimate for a fuller picture.
- Can I use this BMI calculator for children?
- No. This calculator uses the adult BMI formula. Children and teens (ages 2–19) need BMI-for-age percentile charts, which differ by age and sex. Consult a pediatric provider.
