About This Calculator

Anemia — a below-normal concentration of red blood cells or hemoglobin — affects roughly 25% of the world's population. It often develops gradually, with symptoms that are easily attributed to other causes: fatigue, pale skin, shortness of breath, and dizziness are common but non-specific. This checklist combines eight common symptoms and four known risk factors to produce a risk score that can help you decide whether to discuss a CBC (complete blood count) with your doctor.

What symptoms does the calculator check?
The eight symptoms are those most commonly associated with anemia in clinical literature — fatigue or low energy, pale or yellowish skin, shortness of breath on exertion, dizziness or lightheadedness, cold hands or feet, headaches, brittle nails, and fast or irregular heartbeat. All are non-specific and can have causes other than anemia.
What are the risk factors included?
The four risk factors are a vegetarian or vegan diet (reduces dietary iron and B12), heavy menstrual periods (a leading cause of iron-deficiency anemia in women of reproductive age), a chronic disease or kidney problem (associated with anemia of chronic disease), and a family history of anemia or blood disorders (which can indicate inherited conditions like thalassemia or sickle cell trait).
How is anemia diagnosed?
Anemia requires a blood test — specifically a complete blood count (CBC) measuring hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood cell indices. Ferritin, B12, and folate levels may also be checked to identify the underlying cause. This calculator is not a diagnostic tool; it is intended to prompt a conversation with your doctor.
What are the most common types of anemia?
Iron-deficiency anemia is the most prevalent worldwide. Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency causes megaloblastic anemia.
