About This Calculator

Enter your area dimensions and desired depth, and instantly see how many cubic yards of topsoil to order (bulk) or how many bags to buy — plus an optional cost estimate. Uses a standard screened topsoil density for weight estimates.

How It Works

Volume (ft³) = length × width × depth (in) ÷ 12. Volume (yd³) = volume (ft³) ÷ 27. Bulk order = ⌈yd³⌉. Tons = yd³ × 1.10 t/yd³ (screened topsoil). Bags (1 cu ft) = ⌈ft³ ÷ 1⌉. Topsoil density sourced from USDA/engineering reference tables.

The Formula

yd³ = (length × width × depthIn) ÷ (12 × 27) tons = yd³ × 1.10

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep should I add topsoil for a new lawn?
For establishing a new lawn from seed, add 4–6 inches of topsoil to ensure roots have a nutrient-rich zone. For overseeding an existing lawn (topdressing), 1/4–1/2 inch is sufficient. Raised garden beds typically use 8–12 inches of amended topsoil and compost mix.
How many cubic yards of topsoil do I need for a 10×10 ft garden bed at 6 inches deep?
Volume = 10 × 10 × (6÷12) = 50 cu ft ÷ 27 ≈ 1.85 yd³ → order 2 yd³. That's about 50 of the standard 40-lb (1 cu ft) bags, so bulk delivery is almost always more economical at this scale.
What is the difference between topsoil and garden soil?
Topsoil is the upper layer of natural soil — screened to remove large debris but otherwise unamended. Garden soil (or potting mix) is topsoil blended with compost, perlite, or other amendments for better drainage and fertility. Use topsoil to fill large volumes cheaply; use garden soil for planting beds or containers where drainage is critical.
Are weight estimates accurate?
The 1.10 tons/yd³ density is a midpoint estimate for screened, moderately moist topsoil. Wet or clay-heavy topsoil can exceed 1.30 t/yd³; dry, loamy topsoil may be as light as 0.90 t/yd³. Always add a 5–10% buffer to your order.
