About This Calculator

Enter your clock-in and clock-out times to see exactly how many hours you worked. Add an optional unpaid break and the result is shown in both decimal hours (useful for payroll) and HH:MM format. Overnight shifts are handled automatically.

How It Works

Select your clock-in and clock-out times using the time pickers. Enter the length of any unpaid break in minutes (enter 0 for no break). The calculator subtracts the break from the total shift length and returns the net hours in both decimal and HH:MM formats.

The Formula

Net hours = (Clock-out − Clock-in) − Break. For a 9:00 to 17:30 shift with a 30-minute break: gross = 8h 30m = 510 min; net = 510 − 30 = 480 min = 8.00 decimal hours = 8:00 HH:MM. Overnight shifts (clock-out before clock-in) automatically add 24 hours (1440 min).

Frequently Asked Questions

How are overnight shifts handled?
If clock-out is earlier than clock-in, the calculator automatically treats the shift as crossing midnight and adds 24 hours. For example, a 22:00 → 06:00 shift is calculated as 8 hours worked.
What is decimal hours and how do I use it?
Decimal hours express time as a decimal fraction — 8.5 means 8 hours and 30 minutes. Payroll software and hourly-rate calculations often require decimal hours. To convert manually, divide minutes by 60 (e.g. 30 min ÷ 60 = 0.5).
Can I calculate a shift with no break?
Yes — enter 0 in the break field (or leave it as default 0). The calculator returns the full gross shift time as the result.
What happens if the break is longer than the shift?
The calculator will show an error — break time cannot equal or exceed the gross shift time.
