Square Yards Calculator
Convert room dimensions from square feet to square yards for carpet and flooring orders. Includes waste factor and linear yards estimate for standard 12 ft carpet rolls.
About This Calculator
Enter your room length and width in feet to instantly convert to square yards for carpet and flooring orders. Set a waste factor (10–15% is typical for cuts and seams) and the calculator adds the overage automatically. It also estimates linear yards needed from a standard 12 ft wide carpet roll — the number to give to your flooring supplier.
How It Works
Area (sq ft) = length × width. Square yards = area ÷ 9 (exact: 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft). Square meters = area × 0.09290304 (NIST SP 811). Waste-adjusted sq yd = sq yd × (1 + wastePercent ÷ 100). Linear yards from a roll = strips needed × length ÷ 3, where strips = ⌈width ÷ roll width⌉.
The Formula
sq yd = (L × W) ÷ 9
- L
- room length (ft)
- W
- room width (ft)
- 9
- square feet per square yard (exact)
Frequently Asked Questions
- Why do carpet stores quote carpet in square yards instead of square feet?
- Square yards have historically been the flooring industry standard in the United States, and carpet pricing is traditionally quoted in dollars per square yard. Knowing your room area in square yards lets you directly compare quotes from multiple stores without unit conversion. Some retailers now also quote in square feet — simply divide square feet by 9 to convert.
- What waste factor should I use?
- A 10% waste factor is standard for straightforward rectangular rooms where the carpet grain runs in one direction. Use 15% for L-shaped or irregular rooms, stairways, or patterns with a grain direction. Use up to 20% for large pattern repeats or very angled cuts. In practice, carpet installers always bring extra — leftover carpet can be used for closets or touch-up patches.
- What is a linear yard of carpet and why does it matter?
- Carpet is manufactured on wide rolls (typically 12 ft wide in the US). Flooring stores sell by the linear yard — the number of running feet along the roll divided by 3 (1 yard = 3 ft). To cover a 12 × 15 ft room with a 12 ft roll, you need 5 linear yards (15 ft ÷ 3 = 5 yd). If your room is wider than 12 ft, the installer must seam two strips together, and the linear yard count increases accordingly.
- How do I calculate square yards for an L-shaped or irregular room?
- Divide the room into simple rectangles. Calculate square yards for each rectangle separately and add them. Alternatively, measure the smallest bounding rectangle that contains the entire room — the overage will be part of the waste allowance. For complex room shapes, ask your flooring retailer to do an in-home measurement before placing your order.
