About This Calculator

Divide a restaurant bill equally among any number of people, including tip. The calculator uses a carry-remainder algorithm so the total always adds up exactly — no missing cents, no awkward rounding gaps.

How It Works

Enter the pre-tax subtotal, tip percentage, and number of people. The tip is added to the subtotal, and the result is split using carry-remainder cent allocation: the total is converted to cents, divided evenly, and any remainder cents are distributed one per person until exhausted. Most people pay the same amount; at most a few pay one cent more.

The Formula

total = subtotal + (subtotal × tip ÷ 100) per person ≈ total ÷ n

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some people pay $0.01 more than others?
When a total doesn't divide evenly into cents, the remainder cents are distributed one to each person until exhausted. For example, $100 ÷ 3 = $33.33 with a 1-cent remainder — one person pays $33.34 and two pay $33.33.
Does this include tax?
No — enter only the pre-tax subtotal. If you want to include tax, add the tax amount to the subtotal before entering it. The calculator adds tip on top of whatever you enter as the subtotal.
What tip percentage should I use?
18–20% is standard for sit-down restaurants in the US. Use the quick-tip buttons for common percentages.
