Your target matches your Social Security Full Retirement Age.

SSA FRA is the age at which you receive 100% of your Social Security benefit. Claiming earlier (minimum age 62) permanently reduces benefits; delaying increases them up to age 70. Source: SSA.gov.

About This Calculator

Enter your date of birth and a target retirement age (or a specific date) to see exactly how many years, months, and days remain until you retire. The calculator also shows your Social Security Full Retirement Age (FRA) as a reference point — the age at which you qualify for 100% of your benefit.

How It Works

The calculator converts your birthday and retirement target into calendar dates and uses Julian Day Numbers for precise day counting. For a target age (e.g. 67), it adds that many years to your birthday to find the retirement date, then counts forward from today. The Social Security FRA is determined by your birth year per the statutory schedule (SSA Amendments of 1983).

The Formula

retirementDate = birthday + targetAge years

targetAge
the retirement age you enter (in whole years)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between this and the FIRE Calculator?
The FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) Calculator answers 'Do I have enough savings to retire?' using the 4% safe withdrawal rule. The Retirement Age Calculator answers 'How long until I reach my target retirement age or date?' — it is purely date arithmetic with no financial projections.
What is Social Security Full Retirement Age (FRA)?
FRA is the age at which you receive 100% of your Social Security benefit. It ranges from 65 (born 1937 or earlier) to 67 (born 1960 or later), with 66 plus incremental months for those born 1943–1959. Claiming before FRA (minimum age 62) permanently reduces your monthly benefit; delaying past FRA increases it up to age 70. Source: SSA.gov.
Can I enter a specific retirement date instead of an age?
Yes. Switch the 'Target type' selector to 'Retirement date' and enter the exact date you plan to stop working. The calculator will show how long until that date and your approximate retirement age in years.
