About This Calculator

Enter your yard dimensions and post spacing to instantly see total linear feet of fencing, the number of posts to set, and panels to install — rounded to the nearest whole unit so your order is always sufficient.

How It Works

Rectangle mode: perimeter = 2 × (length + width). Custom mode: perimeter = sum of all side lengths. Post count = ⌈perimeter ÷ spacing⌉ + 1 (one end post plus one per span). Panel count = post count − 1 (one panel between each adjacent pair of posts). Enter cost per linear foot for a total estimate.

The Formula

posts = ⌈perimeter ÷ spacing⌉ + 1 panels = posts − 1

Frequently Asked Questions

What post spacing should I use?
Wood privacy fences typically use 6–8 ft spacing for adequate panel support. Chain-link fences can span 8–10 ft between line posts. Decorative aluminum and wrought-iron fences often use 6 ft spacing for rigidity. Check your panel or rail manufacturer's spec for the recommended maximum span.
Why is post count one more than the panel count?
Each fence section (panel) sits between two posts. For a straight run of N panels you need N+1 posts — one at the start, one between each pair of panels, and one at the end. This calculator uses the same logic for enclosed yards (adding a closing post).
How do I measure an irregular lot?
Switch to Custom mode and enter each side length separately. For lots with more than 4 sides, split them into segments and add the totals manually, then enter the combined perimeter as a single side in Side 1.
Are cost estimates accurate?
The cost estimate is perimeter × your entered cost per linear foot. Actual fencing costs vary significantly by material (chain link is typically $10–$20/lf installed, wood $15–$30/lf, vinyl $25–$45/lf, wrought iron $30–$50/lf). Always get contractor quotes before purchasing.

Estimates only. Coverage figures (sq ft/gallon, bag yield, BTU/sq ft) are industry rules of thumb with real-world variance. Verify quantities with your supplier before purchasing.
