How It Works
Deck area = length × width. Boards needed = ⌈area ÷ 7 sq ft per board⌉ × 1.10 (10% waste). Joist count = ⌈length ÷ 1.33 ft⌉ + 1 (16" o.c. plus header). Beam count = ⌈width ÷ 8 ft span⌉. Optional cost = boards × cost/board + joists × cost/joist.

- What board size does this calculator assume?
- The calculator uses standard 5/4×6 decking boards (actual face width 5.5 inches) with a 1/8-inch gap between boards, giving approximately 7 sq ft of coverage per 16-ft board. If you plan to use different board widths or lengths, adjust your quantities accordingly.
- Why add a 10% waste factor?
- Cuts at angles and board ends, knots or defects requiring you to skip a section, and slight measurement errors can all add up. A 10% buffer (round up, never short) is the standard industry allowance for rectangular decks. Complex shapes with many angled cuts may need 15–20%.
- What is 16-inch on-center joist spacing?
- On-center means measuring from the center of one joist to the center of the next. 16 inches on-center is the standard residential deck joist spacing per IRC R507.5, providing adequate support for standard 5/4 decking. Some situations call for 12 in. o.c. (heavy loads, wider boards) or 24 in. o.c. (engineered lumber); consult your local building code.
