Why does this calculator not include all sources?
This calculator covers the four largest sources of personal emissions for most Americans — transportation, home energy, diet, and air travel — which account for roughly 70–80% of a typical personal footprint. It excludes manufacturing/consumption of purchased goods, water use, and waste, which are harder to estimate without detailed tracking.
Are the emission factors accurate?
The factors are sourced from published US-EPA data (2022–2023 vintage). The electricity factor represents the US national average grid mix; your actual footprint from electricity may be lower if your utility uses more renewable energy, or higher in coal-heavy grids.
What is the US average carbon footprint?
The US EPA estimates the average American generates about 16 MT CO₂e per year across all sources. This calculator uses that as the comparison benchmark.
How can I reduce my carbon footprint?
